Our History

1982

Mainland Custom Marble, Inc. started in 1982 by Johnny Helpenstill and Darwin Miller as a small, cultured marble operation with three employees and a few pieces of equipment.

2000

A new 20,000 SF production facility was built in Alvin, TX and Mainland quickly grew to become a leading producer in Houston.

2006

The company was acquired by Kevin & Kristi Bertelsman and diversified our product mix by adding natural stone and solid surface.

2010

We acquired Countertops Unlimited with Kenny Pierce to grow the stone fabrication business and work in commercial arena.

2013

The cultured marble operation was shut down to focus on natural stone and quartz countertops, and the company name was changed to Mainland Stoneworks.

2016

Mainland opened at 45,000 square foot state of the art solid surface and stone fabrication facility in Winston Salem, NC to serve commercial customers.  The Winston Salem facility was sold in 2020.

2024

We partnered with Travis Yarbrough of Stainless Innovations in Fort Smith, Arkansas to build a fabrication facility to focus on Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.

Countertop pricing in Houston depends on the slab color, slab size, layout complexity, veining patterns and edge details.  Mainland Stoneworks provides free written estimates.

After we have all your information on edges, sinks and faucets and templating, fabrication typically takes 10-14 days.  Installation is normally 1-2 days.

Yes, we provide demo and disposal services.

We template using a digital laser template tool and we photograph the slabs.  The CAD file of the countertops is overlayed on the slab photos and we can move the seams, so we get the best vein match.

We usually cut the sinks from a CAD in our shop, while cooktops and faucet holes are made in the field during installation.

We do use large amounts of water with our robotic cutting equipment.  We cut by hand 15 years ago, but we now use the best technology available.
